Way back in 2009 when we first started BAFilterSupply.com, we carried a product called Cascade Plastic Booster 2 in 1 Plastic Cleaning Additive which was used to remove red stains and odors from your plastic ware. It was by far our best selling product and received more positive reviews than anything else we offer. We, along with our customers, were very surprised to find that this product was discontinued by the manufacturer. After doing some research, the most probable cause for Cascade 2 in 1 being discontinued was because it contained phosphates, a big no-no in the green world that we now live in. The reason? When cleaning products containing phosphates go down the drain, they cause rapid growth of algae resulting in pollution of the water supply. We’ve been searching for a compatible replacement to offer our customers but haven’t found one. Until we do, we can offer some tips on how to keep your plastic ware relatively stain and odor free.
1. “Season” your plastic ware as you would a new iron skillet or wooden salad bowl. Before each use, coat the inside and bottom of lid with olive oil to protect it. You might also try vegetable oil or cooking spray. |
2. Try some Alka Seltzer. Alka Seltzer contains citric acid which is known for it’s cleaning ability. Fill your plastic ware with warm water, drop an Alka Seltzer in, let it soak, wash as usual. |
3. Staying with the citric acid approach, try rubbing your plastic ware with a lemon or a fresh lemon substitute like Realemon and set in the sun for up to a day. |
4. Try some Efferdent. It cleans dentures so why not plastic ware? Fill your plastic ware with water, drop in 2 Efferdent tablets, let soak over night then wash as usual. |
5. Hand sanitizer, like Purell, can be effective. Use a little when washing your plastic ware. |
6. By far the very best advice….NEVER introduce heat. Plastics absorb odors and colors when heated. There is also some evidence that plastics release cancer causing carcinogens when microwaved so you should never microwave in plastic anyway. Also, once you’ve “microwaved” a stain in, it’s hard to get it out. Let foods cool before storing, never microwave in plastic and before cleaning, rinse with cooler water. |
We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for a new alternative product for Cascade Plastic Booster 2 in 1 Plastic Cleaning Additive. In the meantime, hopefully these tips help!
