How To Replace Your Oven Bake Element

The bake element is located in the bottom interior of your oven. It should glow red when heated. If the element doesn’t glow red, if your oven is heating poorly or if the element is blistered or damaged, it may be time to swap it out for a new one.

Replacing your oven bake element is a fairly simple process. These are general instructions. There may be a few variables in changing some elements in specific makes or models of ovens, but the actual process is pretty much the same.

Most important in this repair is to unplug your range or turn off the power supply. If you touch the connectors to the metal interior of your oven, you will get a 220V jolt of electricity coursing through your body. That does not feel so good! Please, think safety first.

You’ll need a Phillips head screwdriver, 1/4 inch nut driver or socket to disconnect the element from the interior of the oven and possibly a needle nose pliers to gently pull the connectors from the element.

The bake element terminal connections are located in the back, bottom of your oven.

After disconnecting the power supply, remove your oven racks and set them aside.
Locate the screws holding the bake element in place. Remove the screws and set aside.
Gently, and I do mean gently, work the element toward you to gain access to the wire connectors. Careful not to disconnect or damage the connector wires. I cannot stress enough how easy it is to lose the connectors back behind the oven at this point. If this happens, you will have to access the connectors through the back of your oven by removing the back panel. So again, gently is the key word here.
Pull the connectors from the element terminals, using the needle nose pliers if necessary. Slightly bend the connector wires so not to lose them back through the access holes.
Remove the old bake element. Inspect the wire connectors for wear or corrosion, replace them if necessary.
Insert the wire connectors into the new bake element making sure of a snug fit. You can slightly crimp them with the needle nose pliers if needed.
Line up the element with the access holes, work into place, line up the screw holes on the element with the oven and reattach using the screws. Make sure the bake element sits flat on the oven floor. You may need to do a little bending here.
Reestablish the power supply and test the new bake element.

Variables:

In some cases, getting to the wire connectors may be somewhat difficult to do through the interior of your oven. You may have to remove your oven door or access them by removing the back panel of your range. Once you gain access the process is the same. Some newer models of ranges have a hidden element under the bottom of your oven interior. Once you gain access to the element, the process is the same.
